Celebi Sultan Mehmed Mosque in Northern Greece Badly Damaged by Fire

The Celebi Sultan Mehmed Mosque, also known as Bayed Mosque located in northern Greece in the town of Didymoticho close to the Greek-Turkish border suffered extensive damage due to a fire on Wednesday, authorities have reported.
The mosque was completed in 1420 and was undergoing renovations at the time that the fire broke out. Authorities have speculated that the cause of the fire may have been due to an electrical fault, the ANA-MPA reported.
The Celebi Sultan Mehmed Mosque primarily served as a cultural monument and was not used as an active religious facility. The Turkish authorities have said that they will do everything in their power to help restore the damaged mosque which is known as a historical symbol of a thread of common cultural heritage between Turkey and Greece.
