European Court of Human Rights Elects Greek Judge New Vice-President

“The European Court of Human Rights elected a new Vice-President – Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos (Greece) – on Monday March 20 2017,” says the ECHR press release.
Sicilianos has been elected for a three-year term and will take up his duties on May 1, 2017.
Born in Athens in May 1960, Sicilianos is the son of renowned Greek symphonic composer George Sicilianos. He initially studied the violin on a professional level, but eventually chose to focus on his law studies. He graduated in 1983 with honors and then went for a Master’s degree in Strasbourg. In 1990 he completed his PhD at the European Court.
For years he has been active in the field of Human Rights and is scientific director of the Aliki Maragopoulou Foundation for Human Rights, which has an advisory role with several international organizations. Moreover, he has served as vice-president of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Since the summer of 2011 Sicilianos lives in Strasbourg, after succeeding Christos Rozakis, who was Judge and First Vice-President to the European Court of Human Rights. He will remain there for nine years — this is the prerequisite for the assumption of this position, to which he was elected by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
European Court decisions are compulsory and their implementation is tracked by the Committee of Ministers of the Council. The Human Rights Court consists of judges and academics.
