European Court to Decide if Raki and Tsipouro Will Receive Full Tax Rate

It is possible that following a referral on Wednesday by the European Commission that Greece’s tsipouro and raki producers might be losing its tax statutes in the near future, which would result in higher taxes being imposed on the products.
Currently the case is going to the European Court of Justice and if Greece is found guilty of favoring its own producers against foreign ones when it comes to tsipouro and raki, the two products will have a full special consumption tax imposed on them instead of the current reduced tax. At this time Greece imposes a 50 percent discount on special consumption tax on these products even though there is no special exemption for them.
The commission is asking for the full taxable amount of €10.20 per liter to apply to the products which would drastically increase the tax on tsipouro and raki which currently stands at around €5.10 per liter.
