Bailout Cuts in Greece Course Sharp Decline in Teachers on Staff in Secondary Schools

The Greek bailout not only came with financial restructuring and pension cuts but also included mass hiring freezes that could continue to affect how children are taught in secondary schools.
The hiring freeze in combination with a large numbers of teachers retiring out of the Greek school system has also attributed to the average age of teachers being close to 50 years older than their pupils.
“In light of existing trends… many teachers will be almost 50 years older than their pupils in a few years,” said Nektarios Kordis of the Greek Central Council for Secondary Education (KYSDE). According to data provided by KYSDE, the average age of teachers at Greece’s high schools and senior high schools is 48.8. Math teachers, according to the same figures, have the highest average age at 52.
