Greek PM Tsipras Calls on Merkel After Turkish Provocations in Aegean

Athens is concerned about the recent Turkish provocation in the Aegean and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has called on German Chancellor Angela Merkel ahead of her visit to Turkey on February 2.
Greek government officials believe that Sundays’ appearance of a Turkish Navy gunboat carrying Chief of General Staff Hulusi Akar at Imia islet is an act of retaliation after Greece’s Supreme Court ruled against the extradition of the eight Turkish army officers accused of participating in the July coup attempt.
According to a real.gr report, The Greek prime minister is to call the German chancellor on the telephone and complain about Ankara’s actions. Germany appears to face a similar situation as 40 Turkish soldiers have requested political asylum in the country and Turkey asks for their immediate extradition.
Greece is also worried that Turkey may suspend the agreement with the European Union on stemming migrant flows to the Greek islands. Thereby the Greek prime minister is considering the meeting between Merkel and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of high importance.
The two state leaders will discuss Germany-Turkey issues, such as the case of the 40 Turkish soldiers who seek asylum in Germany and the refugee crisis.
In addition to the diplomatic initiatives, Athens will ask for further involvement of Frontex in guarding Aegean waters and possibly further assistance from NATO vessels.
