Turkish Warship With Army Chief On Board Sails into Greek Waters Near Imia; Military on High Alert

On Sunday a Turkish fast attack craft (FAC) carrying Turkey’s Chief of General Staff Hulusi Akar entered Greek waters around the islet of Imia around 10:30 a.m., according to sources.
A FAC is a small, fast, agile and offensive warship armed with anti-ship missiles, guns or torpedoes.
The Greece gunboat Krateos made contact with the Turkish ship and requested that they depart from Greek waters. After a few minutes, the Turkish FAC obliged and no further incident occurred. Since the incident the Greek military has been on high-alert.
The islet of Imia is the same location where a near confrontation between Greece and Turkey took place back in 1996.
The naval ship that entered Greek waters this Sunday is said to have been escorted by several assault crafts carrying commandos.
Tensions have increased between Greece and Turkey in recent weeks as Turkey has demanded the extradition of eight of its military officers who fled Turkey for Greece following the failed military coup attempt in July 2016. Last week the Greek Supreme Court ruled against the extradition of the soldiers.
As propaganda the Turkish military released photographs showing Akar on the gunboat, with Imia in the background following the incident on Sunday.
