CIA: USSR Wanted 'Republic of Macedonia' With Thessaloniki, Kavala, Alexandroupolis in 1950

A CIA document recently declassified and published on its website, refers to a Soviet Union plan to create a “Republic of Macedonia” including Thessaloniki, Kavala, Alexandroupolis and all Macedonia and Thrace regions.
The document written in 1950, one year after the Greek Civil War and six after the German Occupation, talks of a “Soviet Union administered committee” that would create movements to instigate uprisings in order to create a “unified Republic of Macedonia.” The movements would be armed and most of them would be in the Thessaloniki region.
The simultaneous uprisings would take place in Thessaloniki and on Greece’s northern border, as well as in Yugoslavia and Bulgaria. The new “Republic of Macedonia” would include the ports of Thessaloniki, Kavala and Alexandroupolis.
The committee would be directed by the Soviet ambassador in Sofia, while USSR would provide arms and field commanders.
