Oscars 2017: Three Greeks Nominated for Academy Awards

 

Greek filmmakers Yorgos Lanthimos and Daphne Matziaraki, along with costume designer Mary Zophres, have been nominated for Oscars at the 89th Academy Awards set to take place February 26 in Los Angeles.

Written and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, “The Lobster” starring Collin Farrell has been nominated for best original screenplay. This is the second nomination for Lanthimos, who shares the nomination with fellow writer Efthimis Filippou, after his film “Dogtooth” made it to the final five for best foreign-language film six years ago.

Daphne MatziarakiThe documentary “4.1 Miles” by Greek director Daphne Matziaraki has been nominated in the best short documentary category. The film chronicles a Greek coast guard rescue mission trying to save war-torn refugees from the sea as their boat capsized trying to make their way to Greece from Syria.

Costume designer Mary Zophres is the third Greek nominated for a golden statue this year for “La La Land.” She has been working in the film industry since 1989 and she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for the 2010 film True Grit. She was also nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Costume Design for True Grit and for the 2002 film Catch Me If You Can.

The 89th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will take place at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center. Tune in to the broadcast at 5:30 PM PT/8:30 PM ET on ABC.
