After decades of experience as CEO of Fox Filmed Entertainment with a respected tenure that ended last year, Jim Gianopulos is being asked to helm a huge expansion of Legendary Pictures.
Though the company started as a financing vehicle for helping produce large films such as “The Dark Knight” and “Hangover”, Legendary has also recently released many high-earning films such as “Jurrasic Park”. However, the current executives want to turn Legendary into a full-fledged studio with expanded production, as well as marketing and distribution.
Jack Gao, the CEO of Dalian Wanda Group (which has taken over Legendary), said, “As we move forward, Wanda aims to transform Legendary into a next-generation studio of the future with a far-reaching creative and global platform”
In a general time of instability and crisis for several major movie studios, this could be a risky move.
Gianopulos has not publicly commented on the offer yet. It is possible he is still deciding where his future may lie, as his name has been brought up in talks with several other studios as well, including Sony and Time Warner.
