Greece's Blood Banks Face Shortage

Many people in Greece who receive regular blood transfusions are not able to have a complete transfusion due to blood shortages throughout the country’s blood banks.
The Association of Cooley’s Anemia Sufferers says that the shortages are a result of the state’s failing to ensure sufficient stock before the winter season, when people donate less blood due to the cold weather and flu.
Even the hospital with the biggest blood transfusion ward in Greece, Aghia Sofia Children’s Hospital is seeing the impact of shortages as they posted an announcement on Friday saying that its 700 patients can expect that as of Monday they will be receiving only one unit of blood per transfusion instead of the two to three they usually are allotted.
