Athens Municipal Worker Causes Outcry for Closing Homeless Shelter

An Athens municipal worker who was overseeing a homeless shelter caused a stir after he closed the premises and sent people seeking refuge from the snowfall, out in the cold.
Reportedly, on Monday night the man told the homeless to leave the heated shelter because his shift was over and his replacement had called in sick. Dozens of people were inside when they were told they had to leave the shelter.
According to ANA-MPA news agency, the man chose to shut down the premise instead of looking for a replacement. He also failed to report the absence of the night-shift worker to his superiors.
The incident became known after a man who had accompanied a homeless person to the shelter found it closed the moment the municipal worker was leaving.
The man notified the authorities and the shelter reopened about one and a half hours later. The “Good Samaritan” made a video of the whole incident and posted in Facebook. The video became viral within hours.
The City of Athens has launched disciplinary action against the municipal worker.
