After Latest Tax Hike Greece Has 6th Highest Unleaded Gasoline Price in the World

Citizens across Greece are calling the Greek government out on the recent tax hike that has placed the country sixth in most expensive gas prices in the world — specifically forĀ unleaded gasoline.
According to data from the Greek Finance Ministry, the country’s latest fuel tax increase will bring in an additional 670 million euros in 2017, however, Greeks have been steadily decreasing their unleaded gasoline consumption over the past 6 years by more than 1 billion liters annually.
Some of those hardest hit by the increased taxes on gasoline whichĀ started on January 1, 2017 are Greeks living on the islands where 1 liter of unleaded gas can cost as much as 1.93 euros per liter.
Last year many islands saw the tax rate on unleaded gasoline raise steeply from the discounted VAT rate of 19 to 24 percent, while the mainland of Greece saw an increase from 23 to 24 percent.
