Greek Police Arrive in Rio to be Briefed on Ambassador’s Murder

A Greek mission including two officers of the Homicide Division of Greek police and the head of Interpol’s office in Athens have arrived in Rio for formal investigation into the Greek ambassador’s murder.

Ambassador of Greece to Brazil Kyriakos Amiridis, 59, was murdered by a 29-year-old old Brazilian police officer who confessed to be the lover of the ambassador’s wife, the 40-year-old Francoise Amiridis. The ambassador’s wife is suspected of ordering the murder.

The Brazilian police inspector who led the investigation said that other than Francoise Amiridis and her lover, police have arrested the cousin of the perpetrator who allegedly played the role of the “lookout” and helped remove the ambassador’s body with the promise that he would receive 80,000 reais (25,000 U.S. dollars).

The President of Brazil Michel Temer, in a letter to Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said that the murder of the ambassador caused deep sadness and expressed his condolences.

Amiridis served in the Permanent Mission of Greece to the European Union, general consulates in Rio de Janeiro and Rotterdam and the Greek embassy in Belgrade in the first phase of the war in Yugoslavia.

The milestone of his career was when he was Ambassador of Greece to Libya in Tripoli and particularly his role in the evacuation, under conditions of uncontrolled violence, of Greeks and third country nationals from Libya in the summer of 2014. Of key importance was also his contribution to the organization of the International Conference on “Religious and Cultural Pluralism and Peaceful Coexistence in the Middle East” in Athens in October 2015.
