Deaths from Cancer on the Rise in Greece

One in four deaths in Greece in 2014 were due to cancers, says an ELSTAT report released on Friday.
According to the Greek Statistical Authority, deaths from neoplasms – mostly cancers of the digestive system, the lungs and the prostate – rose to 29,155 in 2014, a significant rise compared to 2000, when 23,775 cancer related deaths were recorded.
There was also a major increase in deaths from respiratory diseases, with 12,231 in 2014 compared to 7,994 in 2000.
Deaths due to psychological illnesses also skyrocketed in 2014 compared to 2000. From 84 in 2000, they went up almost eight times in 2014, amounting to 669 deaths.
However, the biggest “killers” in 2014 were blood circulation related illnesses, mainly of the heart and brain. A total 45,859 Greeks died of such causes. Yet, there was a significant drop compared to 2000, when 52,283 such deaths occurred.
