Farmers Against Dock Workers on Strike in Crete

irakl99Cretan farmers on Friday turned against dock workers on strike at the Heraklion Port demanding that they allow ships to sail so they can transfer their produce.
The farmers have camped out in their trucks at the port insisting on loading their produce, while the seamen refuse to break the strike.
ir708_3The angry farmers turned hostile and tried to untie the ropes of Blue Horizon ship, with dock workers blocking their efforts, creating tension as the two sides almost came to blows.
Then a group of farmers shot flares at the seamen, who responded by turning water hoses against the farmers. Then the farmers set a ticket booth and the offices of the shipping company on fire.
Blue Horizon sailed off the port “for security reasons” without loading. Then the farmers surrounded the harbor master and held him hostage, demanding that the ship comes back to load their produce.
According to neakriti.gr, the harbor master was injured and an ambulance was called, but it could not reach the port because it was blocked by trucks.
The dock workers’ strike is on its eighth day with Shipping Minister Panagiotis Kouroumblis threatening that he will draft them if their union (PNO) doesn’t stop the strike.
