SYRIZA vs. SYRIZA: Ruling Party Calls on Greeks to Strike Against Government Policies!

syrizaSYRIZA invites all Greeks to rally against SYRIZA policies in Thursday’s general strike!
An outsider would think that this was a mistake made by the party’s press office. But for Greeks it is an everyday reality: An administration that, among other disorders, suffers from schizophrenia as well.
Let’s take a look at some points in SYRIZA’s labor department official public statement, which attacks creditors and the International Monetary Fund:
“Strike against the neoliberal policies that bulldoze workers’ rights”; “answer to the domestic troika’s interests and their political supporters”; “(against those) who openly or secretly support the destructive actions and extreme neoliberal prescriptions in order to increase the profitability of large business groups”; “unemployment, underemployment, impoverishment of a large part of the population, shutdown of small businesses”; “stop the conversion of Greece into a special economic zone with workers without rights, such as the IMF wants, SEV and their political staff want.”
All this sounds as if the SYRIZA ministers never signed the agreements with creditors, as if it was some other people signing those documents, or as if those who put their signatures on the memoranda of understanding did so with a gun to their heads.
Unfortunately for Greek people, the people in power either suffer from schizophrenia, or they are deceitful rogues. There is no other explanation for this absurd behavior. Only the other day, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras went to pay his respects to a leftist dictator and spoke against capitalism, when a few days before he was begging the U.S. president to say a good word to the Germans about easing the Greek debt. He speaks about struggling for democracy and then eulogizes a dictator who never held elections. He speaks proudly about Greece being on the way to borrow from the international markets, and then turns around and slams the markets. He speaks about the compassion his administration shows to refugees, when most of them live in the most cruel conditions.
Or the finance minister who speaks against the International Monetary Fund but wants European creditors to accept the IMF’s view on Greek debt relief. Or the deputy education minister who said that he is a minister in a country under occupation. The deputy citizen protection minister who wants to open a dialogue with the self-professed anarchists who burn and vandalize Athens on a daily basis. Or members of the European Parliament who speak against Europe. Contradictions abound, to the point of insanity.
A few months ago the prime minister said in parliament that he never lied to the Greek people, he said he only had some illusions on certain matters. Probably the illusions had to do with how the real world works or what governing is all about.
Polls show that the government’s popularity is at an all-time low because of the harsh policies implemented. Yet, the government calls on people to strike against these policies, as if they ask for absolution. Or as if they believe they are still in opposition. Or, worse, as if they believe Greek people are stupid and believe them.
