Greek Court Rules to Extradite 3 Turkish Soldiers

ev_pt22_18_27255762-thumb-large-thumb-largeA Greek court on Tuesday has ruled that three of the eight Turkish soldiers who sought political asylum in Greece should be extradited.
The Turkish army officers had fled to Greece on an army helicopter seeking asylum after the July 15 failed coup attempt in Turkey.
On Monday, a Greek court ruled that three other servicemen should not be extradited to Turkey on the grounds that their safety is at risk, should they return to their homeland where they are to be charged for treason.
All eight soldiers deny participating in the coup and claim that their lives are in danger in case they return to Turkey.
The Athens council of appeals judges approved Turkey’s extradition request for three of the group on charges of being involved in an attempt to overthrow the government, attempting to impede a parliamentary session and the theft of a helicopter. It rejected the charge of involvement in an assassination attempt against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The three men are expected to appeal.
At the same time, the head of the Appeals Court prosecutors, Antonios Liogas, appealed Monday’s court decision according to which three other servicemen were not to be extradited to Turkey.
