Over 600,000 Households Have to Wait Until February for Heating Oil Allowance

heating oilOver the past several years, Greeks have had to cut corners and spending on modern conveniences in order to make ends meet due to rising taxes, slashed wages and pensions.
According to a 2015 survey by the Greek Ombudsman, a constitutionally established Independent Authority established in 1998 as a mediator between the public and private sectors, three in ten Greeks in Athens had no heating or hot water and one in four were living in apartment buildings that had not turned on the radiators since 2010.
This year, in order to ensure that people are able to access heat and hot water over the cold winter months the Finance Ministry has earmarked 105 million euros for a heating oil allowance which is to be distributed to some 600,000 households.
However, government officials have recently decided to amend the qualifying criteria for receiving the allowance and today sources have reported that the Finance Ministry has said that those households entitled to the heating oil allowance will not be receiving the aid until February, 2017.
