Terrorist Attack in Athens

Two men riding on a motorcycle threw an explosive device towards the building of the the French Embassy in one of Athens’ most crowded areas across from the Greek parliament, at about 4.45 am, Wednesday.
According to initial police reports, the two men on the speeding motorcycle were wearing helmets and the object they threw is a hand grenade. The explosion injured the embassy’s police guard in the leg.
Vassilisis Sofias street outside the Greek parliament has been closed by police and anti-terror units investigating the attack.

Chief of special police guards Vassilis Doumos spoke on Skai radio saying that after the attack the perpetrators fled to Exarchia, a neighborhood in central Athens.
Police cordoned off the area securing surrounding streets while motorcycle units searched for the assailants, after checking the security cameras.
A motorcycle that matches the description of the one the assailants were riding was found in Exarchia. The motorcycle was not locked and its engine was still warm. It has been taken to forensics for further checks.
Meanwhile, the counter-terrorism unit of Hellenic Police is investigating terrorist groups that had launched similar attacks in the past.
