Representatives of Greek universities gathered on Monday at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center for the presentation of the Greek Diaspora Fellowship Program (GDFP).
The aim of the program is to stop the continuing brain drain in crisis-stricken Greece and keep the brilliant minds in the country, by providing financial aid for research and educational aid from expatriate Greek academics.
The meeting took place at the “Tower of Books,” where the National Library is housed. For Greek university professors it was a first acquaintance with the program, with the program representatives mainly answering questions about the implementation of the program in Greek universities.
Along with Greek professors who wanted to learn how to prepare the applications for the January 31, 2017 deadline, there were most of the members of the Group of Advisers which is composed of native Greek and Diaspora academics and is established by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in collaboration with the Fulbright Foundation in Greece.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation will donate 1.25 million dollars to the IIE for the implementation of the Greek Diaspora Fellowship Program. In the next two years, 40 academics who are born in Greece, but have as their basis the U.S. and Canada, will receive scholarships to visit Greek universities and to develop cooperative and productive educational relationships with students, academics and learning institutions. The fellows will teach graduate students, will design the curriculum and will prepare studies at universities across Greece.
The program was presented by IIE Program Coordinator Jeremy Coats along with the executive director of the specific program, Maria de los Angeles .
