It has been decades since Ben Needham disappeared in 1991 on the Greek island of Kos while playing on the property his grandfather was renovating.
There are no certain answers as to what happened to the toddler, and new claims that he might have been accidentally crushed by a JCB came to light a few months ago, prompting a new investigation when the theory that Ben may have been accidentally crushed by a JCB digger came to light.
The New Lead: Konstantinos “Dino” Barkas
JCB digger ben need hamJCB driver, Konstantinos “Dino” Barkas passed away last year from cancer. Following his death, a friend came forward saying that Barkas took a secret with him to his grave — he had admitted to him that he accidentally crushed the toddler with his JCB digger and buried his body.
Last week the investigation wrapped up with some “60 items of interest” investigators said last Wednesday. However, investigators were quick to point out that there was nothing major revealed in the latest search for Ben that sifted through some 800 tons of rubble.
The last day of the search as investigators were ready to throw in the towel what is believed to be a major breakthrough in the case was discovered — the toy car that the little boy is said to have been playing with on the day that he went missing.
A Major Breakthrough
Ben’s mother Kerry and his grandmother broke down in tears as investigators presented their find of the toy car as evidence that it was “very likely” that the little boy was accidentally crushed and killed by the JCB digger that was working in the area.
The car was reported to be found at a dump site that JCB driver, Konstantinos “Dino” Barkas used while working on a property a half mile from the farmhouse where the Needhams were staying.
Mirror.co.uk reported that Ben’s grandmother, Christine, commented on the discovery of the toy car which was one of two she had bought for Ben in Kos town soon before he went missing.
“He had one in one hand and another in the other and he was banging them together to make a clanking noise. They were going ‘clank, clank’ but I thought it was quite good because it kept him occupied. I remember buying the two cars,” she said.
Ben’s grandmother added that she was in shock over the discovery of the toy car.
“I expected it to have no paint on but I was 90% sure it was Ben’s. When I saw it I felt disbelief. It must have been dumped at that site by Dino. It didn’t walk there,” she said.
What Happened to Ben?
kerry and ben needhamAfter this latest investigation, detectives have come out with what they now believe happened to Ben Needham.
“It is my professional belief that Ben Needham died as a result of an accident near to the farmhouse in Iraklis where he was last seen playing,” commented South Yorkshire Police Detective Inspector Jon Cousins.
“After 21 days of a targeted search across two sites here, this phase of Operation Ben has come to an end,” he added.
“During the course of the enquiries we have made over the last 19 months, we have closed off a large number of theories about what happened to Ben, many of which have been open for over 20 years.
Police believe that Ben’s body was most likely moved from the site of the accident and buried elsewhere.
