Opposition Parties Call for Inquiry Into Varoufakis Overstepping Authority

Yanis VaroufakisClaims that Greece’s former finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis overstepped his authority while serving office and referred to his country as “bankrupt” are resulting in opposition parties stepping up calls for inquiry into the matters.
According to, the economist described some of his actions that are being questioned by the opposition in response to remarks made earlier this week by the Bank of Greece’s Governor, Yannis Stournaras.
“As the finance minister of a bankrupt country, I traveled (economy class) to Frankfurt with the aim of convincing the ECB president that reducing the public debt was a precondition of recovery,” Varoufakis explained.
The opposition parties were not satisfied with Varoufakis’ explanation and officials of New Democracy (ND), To Potami and PASOK have reacted by demanding investigations be held to look into the actions of the current SYRIZA government since they first came into power.
ND secretary Lefteris Avgenakis reiterated promises that his party will investigate Varoufakis further if they come into power in the next election, while PASOK MP Andreas Loverdos deemed Varoufakis’ actions as a felony. Also, To Potami lawyer Dimitris Tsiodras has requested that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras offer an explanation for the actions of Varoufakis while he was in office.
