IMF Chief Calls for Greek Debt Relief and More Reforms

Lagarde
International Monetary Fund (IMF) Chief Christine Lagarde said on Thursday that Greek debt is not viable. She said that while Greece has proceeded to implement some reforms, more work is still needed to be done. She confirmed fears that the Washington-based organization is not prepared to participate in Greece’s third bailout.
Lagarde spoke ahead of the Annual Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank Group in Washington on Thursday. Her tone was one of disappointment that European leaders had not given Greece the required debt relief needed while also showing dismay that Athens had not done enough in implementing more reforms.
Tax and social security changes passed by Greek Parliament before summer, met with the IMF’s reservations.
