Greece Set to Experience Rare Rex Blocking Phenomenon

rex
Greece is about to experience a rare meteorological phenomenon known as Rex Blocking. The last time that it experienced the unusual weather experience was on October 3, 1991, when temperatures fell to 16 degrees centigrade within one or two days.
In meteorology, blocking happens when centers of high pressure and low pressure set up over a region in such a way that they prevent other weather systems from moving through. In this way, systems are forced to go around it.
Blocks can be experienced for several days, causing monotonous weather for locations under the block. Named after meteorologist Daniel Rex, who studied the unusual weather pattern in 1950.
In Greece, winds will be blocked from moving in an easterly direction. Warm air masses of northwestern Europe will move in a northeasterly direction whereas cool air masses from Ukraine will move towards the Balkans. As a result, temperatures will drop substantially. Though more often noted in Western Europe, blocking is often perceived in Greece.
