Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras reprimanded Deputy Citizen Protection Minister Nikos Toskas for using tear gas against pensioners who were protesting the new pension cuts.
After pictures of sad old men with swollen, teary eyes made the rounds in the press and social media, Tsipras in another hypocritical show of his leftist ideals put the blame on the deputy minister.
The prime minister called Toskas on the telephone and expressed his disapproval of the use of tear gas against the pensioners and asked him to prohibit the use of chemicals against protesting workers and pensioners.
Too bad the prime minister failed to fulfill his pre-election pledge that promised: when SYRIZA comes to power, Greece would become an ideal state where people will never have the need to protest against anything, ever again.
Then, the citizen protection deputy minister assumed full political responsibility of the riot police action to use chemicals. Like a good leftist, Toskas actually issued an official statement that is verging on laughable.
“The Ministry of Citizen Protection assumes the political responsibility for the limited use of chemicals during the pensioners protest today, October 3, 2016, at the intersection of Vasilisis Sofias Avenue and Irodou Attikou Street. After today’s incident, we have given orders to prohibit any use of tear gas in protests of workers and pensioners.”
What is missing from this hypocritical and intelligence-insulting statement is that the next time pensioners or workers will protest, police will spray them with rose-water and buy them lunch afterwards. And, please, someone explain what the phrase “I assume political responsibility” from a politician means.
This, from an administration that came to power after calling people to take it to the streets until they overthrow the previous government. And from a minister who never took action against self-professed anarchists who beat public bus ticket inspectors, burn public buses, private cars and smash shops and terrorize the Exarchia neighborhood, but has said that he is willing to open a dialogue with them. And, by the way, two of the anarchists are sons of SYRIZA cabinet members, but Toskas conveniently ignores that, of course. A “citizen protection” minister who only protects his own.
