NY Greek Film Festival Kicks Off With ‘Worlds Apart’

J.K. Simmons and Christopher Papakaliatis

The New York Greek Film Festival kicks off today, October 1st, with one of the highest-grossing Greek movies of the past year – “Worlds Apart”, by writer, director, and actor Christopher Papakaliatis.

The screening was sold out in advance, leading to a packed house full of Greek-Americans and New York film aficionados filing in to see movie, where Christopher Papakaliatis was also in attendance.

“Worlds Apart” follows three different love stories set amidst a backdrop of Greece in turmoil due to the current economic and refugee crisis. Each love story involves a non-Greek falling in love with a Greek. In addition to beautiful performances by Greek actors such as Maria Kavoyianni, the film features international actors such as Andrea Osvart and Academy Award winner J. K. Simmons.

The 2016 New York Greek Film Festival is sponsored by the Onassis Foundation USA, as well as the Hellenic American Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to “Worlds Apart”, the festival will screen plenty of films from Greece (“Suntan” and Athina Rachel Tsangari’s “Chevalier”), documentaries set in Greece (“4.1 Miles” and “Athens From Beneath”), as well as movies from all over the world helmed by Greek directors and starring Greek actors (including the Australian production “Adam and Eve”, directed by Peter Andrikidis).
