Clashes Among Migrants in Chios Refugee Camp Leaves 4 Injured [video]

ei1-708Violence erupted between Algerian migrants and Syrian refugees on Thursday shortly before midnight at the Souda refugee camp on Chios, resulting in four people injured.
According to local website astraparis.gr, a violent incident started when a group of Algerians started a fight with Syrians. Initially, police watched from a distance in order not to provoke further violence, but intervened when things started getting rougher.
The two sides used iron bars, clubs and rocks as the violence escalated. Migrants and refugees who did not participate in the fight, and especially families, asked to be moved outside the camp during the fights. Four people were injured and were transferred to the local hospital to receive first aid.
Then the fights spread outside the camp, with migrants smashing the car of a camp employee. Sporadic fights between the ethnic groups went on for two hours.
According to the report, police arrested 15 people who started the fight. They will be put in a camp for migrants awaiting deportation.
