The Plan for Refugee Reception Classes at Greek Schools

Refugee Children to Start Attending School

The ministries of education and migration presented the education plan for refugee children. The program is based on the suggestions of a team of scientists who gathered their findings together in May 2016.
The plan is as follows:
Primary and secondary education reception classes for refugees and migrants will operate from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at schools near their lodgings. The afternoon classes have been created to ensure the psychosocial support needed by the children for their gradual entrance into the Greek education system. It is hoped that in this way, the schools will not be burdened by a sudden surge in students.
Reception classes will include Greek and English lessons, math and computers so that the refugee children will be ready to enter Greek or other European classes from the following academic year.
The units to host refugee reception classes will be chosen according to the number of children and availability of halls.
Children who don’t live in areas where there are organized reception centers will be able to study at nearby schools or reception classes at schools near their area.
Students over 15 years and adults will be able to attend lessons for Greek language acquisition, sports and art. They will have the opportunity to study at technical and professional schools provided they learn how to speak Greek but they will also have a chance to learn their own language.
