Greek PM A. Tsipras: Greece is Exiting the Crisis with Society Intact

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras addressed the Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) central committee on the second day of its work. He hailed constructive dialogue and pointed to a tough battle ahead following the “looting of society” that has lead to the crisis that Greece is dealing with today. “All the political forces of the old Greece have joined forces against us. Against SYRIZA and our government. They have every reason to do so because the oligarchs understand that our government has deep roots in society,” said Tsipras.
The leftist leader referred to his meeting with Bank of Greece Governor Yannis Stournaras on Saturday in the wake of an unprecedented raid of the central banker’s home two days ago as part of a probe into an advertising company run by Stournaras’ wife, Stavroula Nikolopoulou. The raid had to do with contracts received from the state-run Health and Prevention Center (KEELPNO).
“Stournaras yesterday, following our meeting, said in the clearest way what ND cannot understand, that justice is independent and he disconnected the KEELPNO investigation with the situation within the Bank of Greece and the economy,” said Tsipras.
He reconfirmed pledges that he presented at the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair (TIF) and stressed that soon there will be developments in debt to signal the end of supervision by Greece’s creditors.
His speech came a day after main opposition conservative New Democracy party leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ speech at the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair (TIF) on Saturday. He referred to the speech as “dangerous” and he labelled the opposition leader as a “sycophant” whose speech was an “orgy of slander”.
He reiterated that the TV license tender was held with “public interest” in mind. The 246 million euros yielded ended all arguments voiced by the “triangle of corruption”. He also reiterated his pledge to give “every last euro” of the revenues to people who need it.
He said that Mitsotakis announced a plan that cannot be carried out as it includes “dangerous” zones for society and the economy. He said that tax reduction is a brilliant solution and wondered why ND did not move in this direction when they were in government, adding that Mitsotakis is a “darling for creditors”. “Mitsotakis has now come to tell us that he will solve the same problems he created,” he said.
Tsipras wondered how public servants will react to the ND leader’s announcement that he will not increase their salaries and said: “I heard policemen say they will arrest [Alt. FinMin Giorgos] Chouliarakis who’s looking for ways to resolve this. If they want to arrest someone, I’d tell them to go to Thessaloniki,” he said.
Mitsotakis’ Response
The opposition conservative leader, in Thessaloniki, said that he understood Tsipras’ reactions to his speech at Thessaloniki’s TIF on Saturday. He invited citizens to compare the points made by Tsipras at TIF with his own. “It is not healthy for a democracy when the prime minister leaves insinuations regarding the arrest of the leader of the opposition,” said Mitsotakis.
