72.2 Percent of Unemployed Have Been Seeking a Job for Over a Year

The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) presented data for the workforce. In the 2nd quarter of 2016, the number of employed were at 3,702,613 people, whereas registered were at 1,112,075 people. The unemployment rate slightly decreased to 23.1 percent, compared to 24.9 percent in the previous quarter and 24.6 percent for the corresponding quarter of 2015. Employed people increased by 2.7 percent compared to the previous quarter and by 2.1 percent compared to the second quarter of 2015. Unemployed people decreased by 6.9 percent compared with the previous quarter and 5.8 percent compared to the 2nd quarter of 2015.
The unemployment rate for females was at 27.6 percent, considerably higher than the unemployment rate for males (19.4 percent). As regards the unemployment rate for different age groups, the highest unemployment rate was recorded among people in the age group of 15-24 years (49.1 percent). The unemployment rate for young females was at 52.5 percent.
Education played a role in unemployment, with higher rates among people who did not attend school (31.6 percent) and at 27.4 percent for those who only completed lower secondary schools. The lowest unemployment rates were noted among those who had completed post-graduate degrees or with doctorates (11.8 percent) whereas university graduates noted 17.3 percent unemployment.
Other factors that influenced the employment rate had to do with the nationality of the job seekers with 28.2 percent unemployment for foreign nationals compared to 22.7 percent.
The areas around Greece with the highest unemployment were Western Greece (31.3 percent) and Western Macedonia (30.6 percent). The Ionian islands only had 11.7 percent unemployment and 17.3 percent for the Northern Aegean.
The most shocking part of the study is the figure for long-term unemployment with 72.2 percent of unemployed people seeking a job for more than 12 months.
