The AP has reported that the European Union (EU) has committed to providing an additional €115 million in humanitarian funding to help aid in the migrant crisis in Greece.
According to official reports on Saturday, the additional funding will be available to assist migrants in many facets of life including educational programs at schools being set up by the Greek government.
The AP also reported that according to Christos Stylianides, the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, the money will go towards other needs of migrants such as food stamps, heating and living facilities for unaccompanied minors.
“We have to respond to the needs of migrants in the EU. Most of these people risked their lives and traveled in a plastic boat to get here. We are providing help to improve the conditions they are facing,” Stylianides commented in Thessaloniki on Saturday.
Currently the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) reports that there are some 60,000 migrants stranded in Greece as other EU countries have placed restrictions on resettling migrants or closed their borders to migrants completely.
