Greek PM: We Will Give Money from TV License Sale to the Poor

Tsipras1Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced on Friday that the revenues from the four television licenses will be distributed to vulnerable social groups.
The prime minister spoke during the inauguration of a section of the Athens-Patras national highway, following the completion of the controversial television license tender,
“This important news gives a message inside and outside Greece that in this country lawlessness and corruption are finished,” Tsipras  said. “After 27 years of lawlessness in the television domain, everyone will be equal, the laws will apply to all,” he added.
“The contest that ended today gave us an unexpectedly high price that simultaneously gives the signal to foreign investors that in this country there will be rules and fair competitions,” Tsipras continued, adding that the government will defend public interest to the end.
Referring to the 246 million euros the sale of the four licenses brings to the state coffers, Tsipras said that this is a significant amount in a period of crisis and that the money, to the last penny, will go to extraordinary relief measures for vulnerable social groups.
“I pledge that every euro of this money will go to extraordinary measures to support vulnerable groups and support those in need in our society,” he said.
At the same time, the prime minister lashed out at opposition saying that, “New Democracy did not believe that we would go against the system. I call them to admit their mistake. To admit that henceforth, by consensus of the political system, we have to go to the next step, which is to set up the National Radio and Television Council.”
