Tax-Free Wine Will Flow If Mitsotakis Becomes PM

Main conservative New Democracy (ND) opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis pledged to scrap the special consumption tax on wine if he becomes prime minister. After meeting with local vintners in Nemea in the Peloponnese on Wednesday, he said that the implementation of the wine tax that was introduced by the Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) government at the start of the year produced no revenues for the state while causing problems for the Greek wine industry through its excessive bureaucracy.
Mitsotakis said that the new excise tax introduced on January 1 sees 0.15 euros added to the cost of a 750 ml bottle of wine and 20 euros to a 1-liter bottle of wine. He described it as a “tragic mistake.”
