The first Repair Cafe – a meeting place for local residents to fix broken appliances – is opening its doors in Aktaio, Patra, in September. Handy volunteers will meet up and help each other repair anything from a broken mug to a laptop. The goal is to reduce waste but other positive factors include strengthened community ties and shared information to help maintain repairing knowledge.
Anastasios Nikoladakis, secretary of the group “Recycling from the Source” states that the repair cafe will allow people to repair things for free while also drinking coffee. “During this period, many people aren’t able to afford buying new things. For this reason, ‘Recycling from the Source’ took this initiative,” says Nikoladakis. “Furthermore, if someone doesn’t want to take back the repaired object from Repair Cafe then we will give it to different groups or schools. We are already functioning on an experimental level, and there are some things we’ve already repaired (e.g. computer screens) that we’ve given to the senior high school of Patras.”
Repairs all keep general safety in mind. Another goal of Repair Cafe is to share expertise and know-how between people.
There are already a 1,025 Repair Cafes around the world. The concept was invented by Martine Postma in 2009. On October 18, 2009, the first Repair Café was held at Fine Wood Theater, Amsterdam West. On March 2, 2010, the Repair Cafe Foundation was set up. This foundation was made to support local groups who want to set up their own Repair Café.
