FT: How to Enjoy Summer Like Yanis Varoufakis

VAROUFAKIS
The Financial Times uploaded mini-interviews with politicians, bankers, business leaders and writers giving tips on how to detox digitally in the sun. It goes without saying that Greece’s outspoken former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis was sought out for his opinion on how to bask in the sun over summer.
This year, Varoufakis states that he’ll be spending summer “accumulating sensations” to help get him through winter. His ideal travel companion is Danae, his partner, along with the spirit of Oscar Wilde. If caught on some beach, chances are he’ll be reading novels by Edna O’Brien or Turkish writer Elif Shafak.
Though Varoufakis doesn’t like to keep up with the news, the news seems to follow him. “My resistance to them is laudable, but often proves insufficiently resolute,” he says.
When it comes to souvenirs, the most memorable he has received is a rusty key to the “dilapidated home of an old lady” from the mountains of Crete as a symbol of a “permanent invitation to return.” His worst holiday memory was when he was “stuck on a yacht at Mykonos harbor, surrounded by the cacophony of merriment created by sad people pretending to be happy.”
His top travel tip misquotes Homer as stating: “It is the journey, stupid, not getting there!”
