Ted Sarandos: Netflix Has to Compete With Pokemon Go

Ted Sarandos

Ted Sarandos was recently part of a big media roundtable for The Hollywood Reporter in which he explained Netflix’s content strategy and it’s need to create “event television”; according to him, Netflix isn’t really competing with cable TV but rather with many other forms of entertainment, such as Pokemon Go.

Sarandos told The Hollywood Reporter that Netflix’s relationship with its subscribers is more personal and one-on-one, so “If you don’t like what you’re watching on Netflix, it’s just one click and cancel. So we have to make noise.”

The subscription service has certainly made a fair amount of noise lately, with the release of must-watch original content such as “Stranger Things”, yet they released somewhat disappointing subscriber numbers earlier this year, partly due to a $2 price hike.

Still, Sarandos explained that the extravagant budget for Baz Luhrmann’s new show “The Get Down” is necessary to create the kind of spectacle Netflix wants.

“We’re not competing against ABC sitcoms, we’re competing against Pokemon Go, we’re competing against the $200 million blockbuster movies.”

“The Get Down” is now available on the Netflix subscription service for interested viewers, so you can see what you think and make a decision on if the budget was worth it.
