Authorities Looking for Refugees Involved in Illegal Activities on Chios Island

police-migrantsAuthorities on the Greek island of Chios are sweeping the island in order to locate and arrest all migrants and refugees who have been involved in illegal activities, following the latest burglaries and thefts.
According to local media, the first round of arrests was completed on Thursday, August 4. In total 40 people were arrested for being involved in recent or older cases. They were all transferred to the mainland and from there they will be deported to Turkey and then their respective countries of origin.
The largest number of refugees and migrants involved in these cases – mainly from African countries – seems to come from the camp of Souda, where the main police operation took place on Thursday, August 4. Furthermore, some of the refugees and migrants had not even been recorded as residents in the existing accommodation facilities of the island.
In order to identify these specific individuals the authorities had to use data provided by police such as the complaints of various citizens and in certain cases evidence that had not been used by police.
