Cypriot Tennis Player Baghdatis Withdraws from Rio Due to Injury

marcos-baghdatisOn Friday the Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis announced that he will not be competing at the Rio Olympics, as he is suffering for an ongoing injury.

In a statement on Facebook, the 31-year-old 2006 Australian Open Finalist said that he hadn’t recovered from an injury and still had “niggling” pain in his elbow.

“Unless I am 100% fit and healthy to compete, I shall not participate at the Olympics because I would be doing injustice to my country,” he said.

He hopes to be in better shape by the time the US Open comes around at the end of August, but injury has plagued the tennis pro for the better part of the past few years.

He is currently ranked at number 42 in the world in his sport.
