Greece and Italy Receive 11Mln Euros for Refugees by the European Commission

refugeesThe European Commission announced on Friday, July 29 that it would be providing 11 million euros in emergency funding to Greece for the reception and registration of refugees and to Italy for the support of search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean.
Regarding Greece, part of the emergency funds will be allocated in order to aid in the reception process of refugees.
According to a statement released by the European Commission, 500,000 euros will be allocated to technical projects aiming to improve the water supply network and sewage system of Samos. Furthermore, 7.3 million euros will go to Greece’s reception and registration service to improve the capacity of reception and medical services, particularly for the eastern Aegean islands.
The total emergency assistance funds that Greece has received since the beginning of 2015 has reached 353 million euros, noted the statement.
Additionally, 2.2 million euros will be awarded to the Italian Coast Guard to fund the on-board provision of food for rescued individuals and to help finance costs for personnel involved in search and rescue operations.
