U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew will visit Athens this week to urge the Greek government to expedite required economic reforms, according to the Treasury Department.
Lew will make a stop in Athens on his way to the Group of 20 finance chiefs meeting in Chengdu, China. The U.S. official will meet with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos over his visit on Wednesday and Thursday to discuss the Greek economy and the bailout program.
“The secretary will encourage the government to continue making strong progress on reforms this summer so that European leaders can begin discussing with the International Monetary Fund the timing and details of debt relief this fall,” the U.S. Treasury said.
According to an IMF analysis on the Greek state debt, a generous debt relief is needed in order for the ailing economy to get back on track.
