EP Commemorates Bicentennial of Lord Elgin's Snatching of Parthenon Marbles

parthenon marblesIt’s been 200 years since Lord Elgin forcefully removed the Parthenon Marbles from the Acropolis. Greek MEP Manolis Kefalogiannis and MEP Thodoros Zagorakis of the European People’s Party (EPP) put forth a relevant proposal for an event to be held at the European Parliament in commemoration of the anniversary. During a radio interview with Praktoreio 104.9 FM, Kefalogiannis said the event will take place at the end of the coming year or the start of 2017 in collaboration with the Acropolis Museum and the Ministry of Culture with the collaboration of other Greek MEPs.
Kefalogiannis said that the event commemorating a “sad event” will be impressive in order to promote the return of the marbles. The 200-year-anniversary is a black day in the history of Greek culture, however, it will offer an opportunity to discuss the matter at an EP level.
Asked whether the Brexit will affect the return of the Parthenon Marbles, Kefalogiannis said that there is no such issue currently on the table, however, he stressed that the main thing would be to ensure that MEPs stood in Greece’s favor.
