Greek State to Pay 700,000 Euros for Buses Damaged by Molotov Cocktails

BUS
The Greek Public Sector was obliged by the State Council to submit 700,000 euros for the destruction of two buses belonging to the national bus service of Greece that were burnt when Molotov cocktails were flung at them by anti-state rioters. It was deemed that there was a lack of police measures despite the orders that had been given by the leadership of the Greek police.
The first bus was torched on December 5, 1997, on Patission Street after a concert with different music groups. At the end of the concert, 100 anti-state rioters left from the students center armed with clubs and started causing damage to shops, cars and a bus on the Marousi-Athens route. The driver and passengers left the bus in fear. Now, 16 years after the incident, the council has authorized compensation worth 137,931 euros as the relevant bodies of the Greek police had received orders to take precautionary measures at the concert but had failed to do so.
The second decision concerns the night of January 15, 1998, following a music concert of 600 or so people at the outdoor area of the School of Philosophy at the University of Athens, Zografou at a time when the controversial education bill by the late socialist PASOK education minister Gerasimos Arsenis was being discussed. Fifty hooded people with clubs, rocks and other objects started throwing these and Molotov bombs, causing problems to a school bus and a city bus. An anarchist organization had claimed responsibility for the attack. Once again, the policemen did not take the necessary safety precautions. Compensation worth 137,931 euros was issued for the damages (a total of 275,862 euros).
This amount, along with interest rates, has climbed to 700,000 euros.
