Greeks in UK Rush to Migration Agencies for Citizenship Following Brexit

brexit In the years leading up to the UK’s EU referendum vote on Brexit, EU citizens didn’t have to worry about their livelihoods or their right to live, work and study in the UK.

Since the UK voted pro-Brexit things have changed.

In the weeks leading up to and the days following the vote many Greeks living in the UK have been rushing to migration agencies in an attempt to secure their residency or citizenship in the country they now call home.

The Director of London’s Immigration Advice Service, Ono Okeregha remarked on the issue, according to abc.net.au.

“We have already seen an unprecedented increase in applications for permanent residency and naturalization (citizenship) applications from EU nationals since the announcement of the intention to hold the referendum,” Okeregha said.

One Greek national who has lived in London for 18 years has found himself in a position that he never thought he would be in, he recently told the BBC. Aristotelis Tsallios said that he contacted a migration lawyer “as soon as the referendum result came out on Friday.”

Then he went on to recant other unfortunate new experiences that he has had since the Brexit vote.

“Some guy was coming out of the train, he started pushing people and shouting ‘f*** off, my country. We don’t want you anymore. Don’t you understand that? Enough already’,” Tsallios said.

“I was in shock because (in my) 18 years in London I have never heard someone speak openly like this in front of such a huge crowd…It was the first time in 18 years that I actually felt like a foreigner or someone who’s unwanted.”
