The Great Gas Station Rip-Off: 1 in 3 Charge More Than They Pump

gas
The first checks of the Ministry of Finance at gas stations around the Piraeus districts of Korydallos, Tavros, Keratsini and Nikaia found foul play. The sudden spotĀ checks by supervisors of the General Secretariat of Industry took place at gas stations using “secret cars” with specially-fitted reservoir tanks that measure the actual amount of liters of fuel that reach the cars’ gas tanks.
Greece daily newspaper Ethnos reports that one out of every three gas stations had adjusted their pumps so that they would count up more liters than those actually pumped into the cars. In this way 5-11 percent less petrol reached the cars than the drivers filling up their tanks paid for. This means that in the case of 50 liters of unleaded petrol priced at 1.43 euros per liter, the driver would be charged an additional 3.5-8 euros. Drivers were ripped off at around 15 cents per liter.
