Greek Asylum Service Busy with Thousands of Applications

lesvos refugeesThe Greek Asylum Service received 4,288 asylum applications in May alone, most of them from migrants landing illegally on the Aegean islands.
According to the service, a total of 2,858 asylum claims were filed by migrants who arrived on the Greek islands after the implementation of the European Union-Turkey agreement that went in effect on March 20. Before them, another 5,919 applications were pending.
The Greek Asylum Service has started operating a little over three years ago, when the civil war in Syria drove millions of Syrians to seek asylum in neighboring Turkey and Europe. The first application to the service was filed on June 10, 2013.
In the beginning, the number of applications was averaging 688 per month. In May 2016, 4,288 migrants applied for asylum. At the moment, the service employs 328 people.
Since its inception, a total of 41,026 migrants have filed asylum applications. Statistically, 29,655 of applicants were male, 11,371 were women and 1,598 unaccompanied minors. International protection at first instance has been granted to 6,828 people until the end of May.
