Greek Aviation Workers Suspend Strike Following Talks with Government

civil aviationGreek civil aviation workers have decided to suspend their planned 5-day strike that was to take place from June 20 to 25 following talks with the government.
The aviation workers were set to protest against new developments of the country’s regional airports.
Fear arose when on Monday, Greece’s privatization agency published an invitation to hire an adviser to decide if some 23 regional airports could be further developed, and workers took this as a threat to their job security.
Privatizing of many sectors in Greece has served as a key element of the three international bailouts Greece has received since 2010. However, each act to privatize has been met with much opposition and fear by workers and unions.
The response of the civil aviation workers union OSYPA to have the 5-day strike would have disrupted air traffic at airports in some of the most popular tourists destinations on the Greek islands.
According to Reuters, OSYPA said that it was satisfied that during several meetings the government as well as tourism officials seemed to show “sensitivity” to the workers issues.
“We convened an hour ago and decided to suspend the strike and proceed to an in-depth dialogue,” OSYPA’s president Vassilis Alevizopoulos announced shortly after meeting with Greek Transport Minister Christos Spirtzis.
