A 29-year-old Chinese tourist drowned at the iconic beach of Navagio Bay, Zakynthos, where the famous shipwreck is located.
The tourist was on a day tour of the island with a group of friends, starting off their cruise from St. Nicholas port. The ship they boarded was anchored 15 meters from the coast when the captain noticed the passenger floating in the water, having lost consciousness. He immediately threw two life buoys into the water and called for help from nearby swimmers. They managed to pull the young man from the water and carry him to the ship, however it was too late for him to be resuscitated.
The Coastal Guards of Zakynthos are currently investigating the matter.
Navagio Bay is one of the more popular beaches on the island, however the seas around it are choppy and access is hard. Oftentimes, cruise ships taking travelers on day cruises have to anchor at a distance from the beach and only strong swimmers manage to make it across.
