Darwin’s Greek Community Wraps 10,000 Dolmades for Glenti Charity Festival

glenti darwinIt’s an annual tradition that would make most Greeks head spin. Even the idea of producing 10,000 of dolmades is daunting to most, yet every year without fail, Darwin‘s vibrant Greek community spends the Thursday before its Glenti festival for charity fundraising wrapping the finger-food-sized vine leaves around a center of stuffed rice and herbs. The event will take place June 11 to 12.

This year some 40 volunteers who contributed their time to creating the 700 kilograms of dolmades were joined by members from the Greek Orthodox Church charity group, Agia Tabitha, which is based on the Greek island of Kalymnos.

The church group arrived in Darwin this week with locally made goods from Kalymnos to sell at the Glenti festival and all proceeds will go to Agia Tabitha’s weekly outreach program in Greece that helps provide around 200 families with milk, olive oil rice and first aid products.

Many Kalymnians who live in Darwin joined in the dolmades making madness in order to give thanks for the sponsorship.

There are many diverse initiatives the festival takes on each year, creating funds to be sent to Greece to help children with disabilities, badly hit farming communities and people with illness.
