Australian Government Issues Drink Spiking Warning for Travelers to Greece

mykonos drinksThe Australian government has reiterated a warning to Australians planning on visiting Greece this summer regarding drink spiking.

On smartraveller.gov.au they have stated that Australians traveling to high traffic tourist destinations such as Mykonos, Santorini and Ios should exercise extra precaution to avoid drink spiking. According to their website, they have not raised the advice level from previous days and urge citizens to exercise normal safety precautions.

“We advise you to exercise normal safety precautions in Greece. You should exercise common sense and look out for suspicious behavior, as you would in Australia. Monitor the media and other sources for changes to local traveling conditions.”

Although there is no new developments to encourage panic for those planning to visit the Greek islands this summer, drink spiking is thought to be quite common among holiday destinations for younger travelers aged in their 20’s. There is uncertainty in regards to how many people are actually victims of drink spiking while on summer holiday in Greece since very few people report the crime when they are victimized.
