Australia Beats Greece 1-0 after 94th Minute Leckie Goal

ÖÉËÉÊÏ / ÁÕÓÔÑÁËÉÁ - ÅËËÁÄÁ / FRIENDLY / AUSTRALIA - GREECEThe Socceroos have beaten Greece’s national team 1-0 in their first friendly after forward Mathew Leckie scored in the 94th minute.

The field of Sydney‘s Olympic stadium was soggy after almost 24 hours of downpour, but luckily for the 38,682 spectators the rain held off during most of the game.

Australia had 17 shots at goal to Greece’s five but Ange Postecoglou’s players seemed to lack the finishing touch. Michael Skibbe’s men started threateningly but soon resorted to good defence.

It seemed that the final whistle would find the two teams in a scoreless draw. Especially when a Tim Cahill header after a corner sent the ball in the net in the 89th minute but the referee called the goal back because the ball had drifted over the byline.

But Leckie thought otherwise when he received a long pass and beat Stefanos Kapino just seconds before the referee sent the two sides to the locker room.

The two teams will meet again in Melbourne on Tuesday.
